A ten-year-old Bridport girl undertook a 46-mile sponsored walk on the way to her summer holiday destination.
Daisy Matterface’s family go to Swanage every summer and this year they decided to walk there instead of drive as they wanted an adventure.
Symondsbury Primary School pupil Daisy went a step further by using the walk as an opportunity to raise money for a good cause. She was joined on the challenge by her brother Toby, 12, her cousins Robin, 13, and Tilly, 11, her mum Chloe and uncle Chris.
The group smashed their fundraising target – and have already raised £346, nearly seven times their initial goal. Their trip was split into three legs: Bridport to Dorchester (18 miles), Dorchester to Lulworth (14 miles) and, the final stretch, Lulworth to Swanage (13.5 miles).
Daisy said they “wanted an adventure” and saw it as a chance to raise money for charity.
She said: “I chose WaterAid because I’d heard lots about it at school and knew it was a really good charity that supports people to have clean drinking water, working toilets and much more. Mum set up a JustGiving page and I set a target of £50.”
The walk itself wasn’t always plain sailing – but a few pesky stinging nettles and brambles were not enough to dampen Daisy’s enthusiasm.
She said: “We had to escape cows, it was a real adventure. We got lost a few times, had to trample through a wood and down overgrown paths, we all got stung by stinging nettles and spiked by brambles.
“The last day was great as our family joined us along the way and were there to welcome us when we arrived.”
She added: “When the walk was really difficult, especially when the sun was out and we had to walk up hills, we would check the total on the (fundraising) page and each time it had gone up a bit which really spurred us on.
“We talked about what the money could be used for and how grateful we were to have clean water since we rely on our water every day, especially on our walk.
“We hope this money can be used to help families that don’t get clean water and I am really grateful to everyone who sponsored me for our long walk.”
