A restaurateur is asking how her business can survive over the winter amidst the cost of living crisis.
Harriet Mansell, who owns two restaurants in Lyme Regis, has written to west Dorset MP Chris Loder voicing her concerns about soaring utility bills and the rise in VAT.
Owner of Robin Wylde in Silver Street and Lilac in Broad Street, Harriet says fuel bills have soared to a level that they 'exceed the business model' and is asking if support is available.
She writes: "Our profit margins were slim, and they have now become non-existent/in a deficit.
"VAT has gone up to 20 per cent on all takings, and this combined with the increased costs of everything leaves us in a position where we are looking at the months ahead and can only foresee a shortfall, which I don't have the resources to buffer."
Harriet says that currently, in this peak summer period, both restaurants are experiencing a decrease in consumer spending coupled with 'increased costs across the board'.
She adds: "We have thoroughly cost checked and audited every price and cost within the business and have worked through with a fine tooth comb and know that we are working to the best of our ability."
The businesses are in a difficult position when it comes to a decision to increase costs, Harriet says.
"We are in a position where we cannot increase our prices in line with everyone else, since our customers will simply choose not to come to us, but if we keep our prices where we are at, customers may still come but in decreased numbers as we are already seeing."
Harriet says her businesses, which are both in the Michelin guide, have created 20 jobs in the resort. The former Great British Menu contestant opened Robin Wylde in October 2020 with Lilac following afterwards.
The restaurants work with local schools, Harriet says, taking on apprentices and working to create a syllabus for schools that inspire children to use nature to help them decide on a career. They also run a series of walks and workshops.
Chris Loder, MP for West Dorset, said he can't discuss a constituent’s private correspondence but added: ‘‘The Robin Wylde restaurant menu costs £85 to 95 per person - for food only.
"It is a very nice ‘high-end’ restaurant serving those with a high-level of disposable income who may be able to afford to pay more for their fine-dining experience in the short-term.
"At the moment, my priority is helping local people and businesses where they are facing a considerable rise in energy prices which are presenting as existential threats imminently rather than the ‘high-end’ category.
"But once the new Prime Minister is elected in September, it will be clearer what the government may be able to do to help all businesses in the autumn and winter."
