It is said the road could be closed for up to three days.
A spokesman for Travel Dorset said: "WPD need to respond to a major fault on their network and need to close this road to carry out urgent repairs. The closure will come into force from 9am this morning and it is not expected to reopen before Saturday."
A spokesman for Lyme Regis Town Council said: "We’ve been informed by Western Power Distribution that there is a severe mains fault at A3052 Bridge Street in Lyme Regis in between the sets of traffic lights outside the Town Council offices. Due to the narrow nature of the road at this location, the only way to safely repair the fault is to close the road.
"Works will commence from 9am tomorrow 25th August 2022 and unfortunately will run in to the bank holiday weekend, it is expected the closure will remain in force."
