‘The F1 of homemade raft racing’ will return with a splash today.
There will be carnage at West Bay as Bridport RNLI’s raft race takes to the River Brit.
Local business come together to thrash it out in the water, paddling as fast as they can part way up the river and back again in rafts they’ve built themselves.
There is added excitement this year as it’ll be the first race since the pandemic began, with events being called off since.
Bridport RNLI volunteer Sadie Miles said: “It’s chaotic, funny and really it’s the F1 of homemade raft racing.
“There’s a lot of water and a lot of fun. It really is hilarious and good fun.”
The much-loved raft race is always a huge hit with both visitors and locals, attracting huge crowds cheering on their favourite team as participants try not to sink, capsize or fall in.
Awards are handed out for first, second and third place as well as specialist categories including Best Dressed.
All fun aside, the event raises vital funds for Bridport RNLI
Sadie said: “Fundraising is so important for us and it really means a lot to get that support.
“The raft race is good fun for all the family so do come down.”
Those taking part will begin to arrive at around 5.30pm with the race kicking off at around 6.30pm.
