STUDENTS at the Sir John Colfox Academy have launched a ‘buy a book for our school library’ appeal.

Two of the student librarians - Kitty and Amber - are hoping that generous local people might consider buying a book for their library whilst they are out shopping. Their campaign is being supported by The Book Shop, in Bridport, which is hosting the students’ wish list of books.

Amber, 15, said: “We thought of the idea when we were doing work experience in the library. Nicky from the Book Shop came in to advise us about ways to promote reading and also offered to help us set up our appeal, which we were delighted about.”

Kitty, 14, said: “Some young people don’t have a lot of books at home, so making sure our library has the very latest interesting and enticing books is more important than ever. We do have a budget for new books, but we are always keen to get as many more as possible.

“Thanks in advance to anyone who might consider buying a book for our library and thanks also to the Book Shop for helping us. Thanks also to the Book Shop for giving us a lovely box of books.”

Nicky Mathewson from the Book Shop in South Street came to visit the students at their library last week

She said: “It was lovely to meet Colfox’s enthusiastic and enterprising student librarians.

“We are of course very happy to help their appeal and encourage Bridport’s next generation of readers. I know how generous our regular customers are, so I think their appeal stands a good chance.”

Liz Launder, Literacy and Reading Co-ordinator at the Sir John Colfox Academy, said: “Learning to love reading is a joy: it is great for our wellbeing. There is a book out there for everyone, and we are determined to find the right book for every student”
