FIRE crews across Dorset are raising awareness of the dangers of cigarettes and smoking products at home.
More people die in fires in the home caused by cigarettes and smoking products than any other cause, according to Dorset & Wiltshire Fire Rescue Service (DWFRS).
The warning comes following No Smoking Day (March 9), with fire crews across the county urging members of the public to kick the habit.
A spokeswoman from DWFRS said: "No Smoking Day is a great initiative to think about stopping smoking.
"If you are going to smoke, make sure you follow our safety advice, which includes stubbing cigarettes out properly and dispose of them carefully.
"Smoke outdoors and use a glass ashtray - never dispose in a bin.
"Don’t leave a lit cigarette, cigar or pipe lying around - they can easily fall over and start a fire.
"Take extra care if you smoke when you’re tired, taking prescription drugs, or if you’ve been drinking. You might fall asleep and set your bed or sofa on fire. Never smoke in bed. Keep matches and lighters out of children’s reach. Consider buying child resistant lighters and match boxes."
