EASTER eggs, hot cross buns and spring blooms are starting to appear in the shops.
Many will be starting to think about school holidays and when the bank holidays will take place.
Here’s a guide to what’s happening and when.
When is Easter in 2022?
This year Easter will fall slightly later than in 2021 with Easter Sunday falling on April 17.
Good Friday will be on April 15, with Easter Monday on April 18.
Both of these dates are bank holidays in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Scotland only marks Good Friday as a bank holiday.
Last year Good Friday was on April 2, Easter Sunday was on April 4 with Easter Monday on April 5.
When will schools be off?
In both the BCP Council and Dorset Council areas, the Easter holidays will take place between April 11 and 22.
Pupils will return to school on April 25 for the start of the summer term which runs until July 22.
The half-term holiday runs between May 30 and June 3.
When will Easter be in 2023?
In 2023, Easter Sunday will fall on April 9. Good Friday will be on April 7 with the bank holiday Monday falling on April 10.
Why does the date of Easter change each year?
The date of Easter Sunday changes each year because, despite the fact that it is a Christian holiday, the date of Easter is actually determined by the Jewish calendar.
The Jewish calendar is based on lunar cycles, and a lunar year has about 354 days, unlike a solar year which has just over 365 days.
Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday after the Paschal full moon, which is the first full moon that occurs after the spring equinox.
The date of Easter can change because the Paschal full moon can fall on various days in different time zones.
When are the other bank holidays in 2022?
The next bank holiday after Easter will be May Day on Monday, May 2.
The spring bank holiday which usually falls on the last Monday of May will instead be taken on Thursday, June 2, 2022.
This is because it will form part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations which will effectively be a four-day weekend.
The Platinum Jubilee bank holiday will be taken on Friday, June 3, 2022.
Then after this, the summer bank holiday will be on Monday, August 29.
Looking ahead to later in the year, there will be a bank holiday after Christmas on Tuesday, December 27.
