A CHARITY which has been successful in restoring two landmarks is now looking for a new project that will help tackle social deprivation.
Bridport Area Development Trust has been looking at potential redevelopment sites in the area as well as discussing how to support existing groups’ activities and encourage business and cultural start-ups.
It says the challenges confronting the community are driving its commitment to 'help build a better Bridport'.
The trust's first projects were reviving a historic beachside Methodist church to create the award-winning West Bay Discovery Centre and saving the Literary and Scientific Institute (LSi) which now houses an innovative charitable and commercial partnership.
The trust works cooperatively to identify, plan and deliver projects that meet local needs and provide long-term social, economic and cultural benefits. Its small team of volunteers is exploring future collaborations and has met with Bridport Town Council and Dorset Council.
Talks with the town council about what Bridport needs have embraced poverty relief, training, education, housing, buildings, public services, the arts, community interest companies and the environment. A key issue has been the council’s commitment to tackling the climate crisis and to creating a rights-respecting town.
A spokesperson for BADT said: “The trust has reached an important point. We are exploring how we can continue to work to enhance the social, economic and cultural wellbeing of Bridport.
"We see collaboration as the best way to provide much-needed new facilities, business and job opportunities, and support for creative projects and the arts.
“We are looking at a wide range of ideas as we decide which best suit our experience and resources and offer real benefits to local people.
“We welcome feedback and ideas from the community; please contact mail@bridportadt.org.uk with your views.”
