THE CAMPAIGN to 'save' a Bridport tradition continues, with paper petitions in a number of Bridport shops.
A petition was launched late last month to close a section of the A35 to allow Bridport Carnival's traditional torchlight procession to go ahead.
The Bridport Carnival Committee was informed by Highways England that officials were no longer prepared to close the A35 at the Crown Roundabout for the 30 minutes it takes for the procession to safely cross the road.
The 'keep the Bridport torches burning' petition now has more than 1,600 signatures online.
The petition has also now moved into shops around the town, with around 20 shops agreeing to help circulate a paper form of the petition.
Carnival organisers say they are still yet to receive a direct response from Highways England.
