IN RESPONSE to Dan Walker’s letter “Traffic Free” in last week’s paper.
The proposal to pedestrianise South Street above Gundry Lane has been put forward many times and on each occasion has been dismissed. Anyone supporting this proposal has clearly not thought through the impact of the resulting increase of traffic in Gundry Lane.
The pavement in Gundry Lane is very narrow with pedestrians often having to step into the road to pass each other. Wheelchair users and mobility scooters have to use the road as the pavements are not wide enough.
On bin days the problem is exacerbated by wheelie bins on the pavements making them impossible to use. Added to this there is a children’s nursery in Gundry Lane which parents/carers with pushchairs and walking toddlers need to access and also a furniture removals company and a car repair company both of which open directly onto the Lane and which generate a lot of vehicle movements on the Lane.
There could also be implications for the residential roads around Skilling which would likely be used as rat runs by vehicles accessing South Street.
Please, before putting forward ideas to “improve the flow of traffic through the town” think through the wider implications of your suggestion.
