I HAVE just read the letter from Kathy Green. I would like to respond to her comments about Dorchester and Yeovil.
She is absolutely correct about Dorchester’s High West Street, many shops are closed, that’s because it is a traffic thoroughfare, with numerous traffic lights and pedestrian crossings, making vehicles stop and pollute the high street.
South Street is pedestrianised and is booming, boasting alfresco eating, market type stalls and care free shoppers not having to worry about traffic, and no exhaust fumes.
Yeovil on the other hand built the pedestrianised Quedam centre and the reason that has so many empty shops is the ridiculously high rents and business rates.
It was also the home of Mothercare, Laura Ashley, BHS, Body Shop to name a few, and we all know what happened to them. While the pedestrian Main Street seems to be fine.
So I totally disagree with Kathy and call on the council to shut South Street as soon as possible.
