AN ELDERLY man who tragically died when he was hit by a car in Lyme Regis, has been named.

An inquest has been opened into the death of Arthur David Palmer, aged 88, at Dorset Coroner's Court, Bournemouth Town Hall.

On Tuesday June 29, Dorset Police was called to reports of a road traffic collision on Broad Street involving a grey Ford Fiesta and a pedestrian at 4.38pm.

Sadly, the pedestrian - Mr Palmer, from Bristol - sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. Despite receiving treatment at the hospital his condition declined and he died in the early hours of Sunday July 4.

The driver of the Fiesta – a woman aged in her 70s from Birmingham – was not physically injured, but was said to be left shaken.

Police Constable Leanne Steedman, of the traffic unit, said: “The Fiesta was leaving the Broad Street short stay car park when the collision occurred. I am aware that this road was really busy at the time."

Following the death, a post mortem examination was undertaken by Dr Andres Kulla on July 13 and the cause of death was reported as multiple traumatic injuries.

Police are said to still be undertaking enquiries in this matter.
