THE DISCOVERY of a mystery object at West Bexington sparked a call to the bomb disposal team.
The West Bay Coastguard were patrolling the west Dorset coast on Saturday, April 17.
Just as the officers were finishing their patrol at 3pm, they were tasked by Solent Coastguard to a report from Dorset Police about a suspicious item on the beach at West Bexington.
On arrival at the scene, the item and first informant were located and pictures and measurements were taken for assessment by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD). A safety cordon was also put in place with the assistance of Dorset Police.
EOD reported that the pictures and measurements were inconclusive and that they would be attending the scene.
Additional coastguard officers from West Bay were paged to assist with the cordon and the Army EOD team arrived at around 6pm to assess the item.
Once the team was happy that the item was not ordnance and there was no danger to public or property, the area was reopened and the item was left in place to be covered by the incoming tide.
The officers then all stood down to return to station.
If you find yourself in difficulty on the coast, or if you see something that gives you cause for concern, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.
