IT WAS interesting to read about another attempt at reviving the old Bridport rail link to Maiden Newton is being made.

In principle it might be be a commendable idea as indeed so have previous attempts. However before they rush off to raise £50,000 to employ various experts to have their say, they need to consider the fundamental problem that has, and always will be the stumbling block of this project - it's in the wrong place.

I was one of the few people still using it on a daily basis when it closed in 1975 and on most journeys made twice a day, I shared it with probably two or three others.

In the intervening years the rural population away from Bridport has changed little and the stations of Powerstock and Toller will still be unable to help support a new venture.

I would suggest these days more people are actually using this old route with its elements of permissive paths by walking or cycling it than ever use it as a commercial railway.

I think a more popular project would be to see the existing track improved for walkers and cyclists and the link to Loders reinstated to enable more people to enjoy it from Bridport.
