A DAIRY farmer lost out on a chance to win a prize of more than £50,000 on a BBC game show.

Andrew Frampton, from Broadwindsor, was a contestant on Michael McIntyre's 'The Wheel' on Saturday night. Unfortunately, the 45-year-old, who only made an appearance in the final 10 minutes of the show, went home empty handed.

The aim of the game is to answer general knowledge questions with the help of seven celebrities, each of strapped to the circumference of a giant wheel.

The three contestants on the show are chosen at random to answer questions. These rules meant Andrew was not called upon to give an answer until the very last question of the game - which if he had guessed correctly, would have seen him walk away with £56,000.

Andrew appeared 50 minutes into the hour long show, quipping 'Sorry I'm late. What have I missed?'. He explained to the presenter that despite wanting to use the money to buy a new plough, his wife would 'have his head on a stick' if he did, so he planned to put it towards a family trip to the USA.

Andrew was given the aid of Dr Alex George (of Love Island fame) to help him answer a question from the 'sci-fi' category. The question was 'Which of these sci-fi baddies made their debut in the 1970s?' The options given were Klingons, Daleks, Cylons and Mysterons.

Dr Alex encouraged Andrew to go with Daleks, but the correct answer was Cylons, meaning there was no winners from Saturday's show. Not missing a beat, Andrew asked Michael McIntyre if they could 'film an alternative ending'.

Andrew told the News: "It was so gutting, you couldn't even imagine it.

"I told my wife what happened but she thought I was bluffing and actually did win.

"The people who did know the answer have let me know - but I think it was quite a difficult question. With a bit of time I think I could have worked it out, I've thought about it every day since."

The contestants were in a separate room away from Michael McIntyre and the celebrities until they were called upon. They had headphones on so they had no idea how their fellow contestants were getting on in the game.

Andrew said: "I didn't have a clue what was happening. The shock was genuine because I did not realise the situation I was in.

"All in all it was a fantastic experience. It's quite hard to get on these shows, 70,000 people applied for 27 spaces on the programme."

The episode is available to watch on demand on BBC iPlayer.
