A dedicated fundraiser suffering from a debilitating disease took on a 10-mile challenge one last time to raise money for charity.
Andrew Wood, 77, walked the coast path from West Bay to Lyme Regis to raise money for CMT-UK, a charity dedicated to supporting people affected by Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT).
Andrew was diagnosed with CMT a condition that damages nerves that control the muscles and relay sensory information to the brain.
He said: “I have experienced progressive muscle wastage in my hands and feet for over 15 years and have recently received a diagnosis of CMT after many years of tests and inaccurate labelling.
“Having been in touch with the charity, I decided that I would like to help with some fundraising as I recognise that investment in further research is critical for understanding and to help support the next generations of people who experience symptoms.
“At the age of 77, I struggle more now with mobility and balance so I decided to set myself the challenge of walking from West Bay to Lyme Regis. It is a walk I have completed solo several times in my life in fitter and younger days and is not for the faint-hearted. The terrain is arduous and varied and includes 10 miles walking over clifftops and on the beach at low tide.”
Andrew was joined on the walk by his daughters and their partners who acted as ‘support crew’.
They set off from West Bay at 10am on September 19 and completed the cliff section to Eype then on to Seatown in just over three hours taking on Thorncombe Beacon. They then took to the beach and passed under Golden Cap over miles of rocks, pebbles, shingle and sand to reach Charmouth. They arrived at Lyme Regis at 5.30pm - seven and a half hours of tough walking.
Andrew added: “It was harder than I expected but I am pleased to have been able to complete unaided and know that is the last time that I will be able to do this particular walk.
“I am extremely happy to have raised more than £890 for CMT-UK and am grateful to all those who have kindly sponsored me and given support along the way.”
