Bridport Town Council is taking advantage of relatively quiet traffic conditions to redecorate the exterior of the town hall.
Scaffolding will be put up on South Street and East Street on Monday, May 11, ahead of repainting and other works to protect and improve the building’s windows and brickwork, which are expected to be completed over a three-week period.
As the town hall fronts directly onto the road in places, the scaffolding will narrow the road during the works.
Town surveyor Daryl Chambers said: “The town hall was extensively refurbished in 2012 so it’s some time since we had to carry out works to the outside of the building.
“We know that scaffolding causes some difficulties for traffic, but it is essential maintenance and we hope people will understand and support the need to keep this wonderful historic community asset in good condition.”
Bridport Town Hall was built in 1786 from local bricks and Portland stone. It is the civic centre of Bridport, but in addition to hosting council meetings, it has also been used as a magistrates court and hosts a range of community events.
It is home to a collection of paintings depicting key elements of Bridport’s history by Francis H. Newbury, former director of the Glasgow School of Art who grew up in the town.
