A football manager has told of his shock on hearing his team's match was called off due to the discovery of a body.

Bridport FC were due to play Odd Down FC away on Saturday, but it was cancelled after the body was found in a van in the car park of Lew Hill Memorial Ground in Bath.

Jamie Manley, manager at Bridport Football Club, said it was shocking to hear the news.

"We had a phone call in the morning," he said. "They were due to have a pitch inspection at 11am due to the bad weather so we were waiting to hear on that side, but a body was found in the car park and the police had it all cordoned off.

"It was not the nicest thing to hear. Football goes out of the window when something like this happens - it’s really not a nice thing to happen.

"It has never happened before while I’ve been at Bridport FC and I believe it is a first for Bridport and hopefully it never happens again.

"It is sad for everyone involved."

Police were called to the scene at Lew Hill Memorial Ground off Coombe Hay Lane at 4.30am on Saturday.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: "The investigation into the unexplained death of a 39-year-old woman in Bath is continuing.

"The woman's body was found inside a van in a car park off Coombe Hay Lane on Saturday morning.

"A forensic post-mortem examination has been carried out but the results were inclusive. Further tests will now be carried out which will take some time.

"A 45-year-old man has been released under investigation while enquiries continue."
