Residents and visitors came together to remember those who fought in the Battle of Britain and find out more about the Royal Air Forces Association.

Members of the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) Bridport and Lyme Regis Group were joined by visitors to West Bay to have a Brew for the Few last Saturday.

The annual fundraising event is held to show appreciation to those few who fought in the Battle of Britain and all those who have served in the RAF. They help raise money for the charity, as well as awareness of RAFA.

Visitors to The Salt House and Fisherman’s Green in West Bay were able to enjoy short films remembering the Battle of Britain display flight, the trials for Operation Upkeep on the Fleet lagoon, the meteorological research flight Hercules investigation into the Kuwait smoke plumes after the Gulf War - with added comments from a member of the crew - and footage of a hang glider flight across the west Dorset coastline.

Members were also selling RAF memorabilia out on the green and a variety of books were for sale, as well as refreshments throughout the day and fun quizzes for both adults and children.

The group was also supported by members of the Royal Naval Association.

Uplyme Morris dancers provided the entertainment in the afternoon with performances bringing in the crowds.

Alan Kidson, of the RAFA Bridport and Lyme Regis Group, said: “Our visitors were extremely generous and that on two counts, the amount collected, and getting our aims over to the public, we were more than satisfied.

“I think that most would agree that the Uplyme Morris side were the big hit of the afternoon. In the hottest part of the day they were tremendous.”

The group’s next event is a Battle of Britain service at St John’s Church in West Bay on Sunday, September 15 at 3pm.
