A 96-year-old widow has received her late husband’s military records from an RAF west Dorset group.

Squadron Leader (Rtd) Bill Davies of the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) Bridport and Lyme Regis Group, met with Elaine Tame of Burton Bradstock to give her copies of her late husband’s military records.

Mrs Tame’s husband, Fred, joined the RAF at the beginning of the Second World War in December 1939 as an airman in the Equipment Branch.

Commissioned in 1947, he served overseas, mainly in the Middle East during the war for four years. Mrs Tame accompanied her husband as he served in Holland, Germany and Aden in Yemen.

After extensive training in the USA, he also commanded a Thor missile base at RAF Hemswell during the Cold War.

He retired in 1968 in the rank of Wing Commander and subsequently worked for 14 years for the RAF Benevolent Fund.

Members of the RAFA Bridport and Lyme Regis Group are hosting a ‘Brew for the Few’ fundraiser on Saturday, August 24 at The Salt House in West Bay from 10am to 4pm.

Find out more about the group, watch a series of RAF action films and take part in competitions.

During the day, there will be short films remembering the Battle of Britain and the Battle of Britain display flight, the trials for Operation Upkeep on the Fleet Lagoon, the meteorological research flight Hercules investigation into the Kuwait smoke plumes after the Gulf war - with comments from a member of the crew - and of a hang glider flight from the Bay.

Bill Davis will also give an illustrated talk of the RAF 100 celebrations.

Children will also have the opportunity to take part in an aircraft recognition competition, enlisting the help of their parents and grandparents, and receive a prize for getting all answers correct. There will also be a general knowledge quiz with a prize of a set of the three-book series, ‘Out of the Blue’.

Members of Uplyme Morris will be performing dances on Fisherman’s Green outside The Salt House at 2pm and 3pm.
