West Dorset has set up the county's first Youth Bank, but what is it? Michael Ray explains...
I HAVE been locally involved with setting up a Youth Bank for the West Dorset area, but first of all what is it? Youth Banks are funding bodies set up for young people, and run by young people (although there are adults behind the scenes to help advise, organise and support).
The idea is to put money into the hands of young people so that we can benefit our communities in a more direct way. Young people can find it difficult to find funding for projects, Youth Banks offer a solution. They provide a place for young people to come with their ideas for the community with the hope of making these ideas a reality.
What's more, Youth Banks benefit more than just the people they fund. It is useful for young people on the receiving end, but also a great opportunity for young people on the giving end.
In other words, setting up a youth bank can give young people a real sense of responsibility as well as being an opportunity to learn about decision-making and teamwork.
It has helped me feel more part of my community and made me feel that I really can start to influence the world around me.
So what's our progress so far? We have filled in the application forms, and are awaiting official status as Dorset's first Youth Bank.
This week we received confirmation that a grant application to the Chalk and Cheese organisation, followed by Zoe's presentation to their Local Action Group in Dorchester, has resulted in £5,000 being donated. We're raring to go. If you want to get involved, or would like to hear more, contact Bridport Youth Centre on (01308) 422500.
