A SECOND public meeting will be held in Lyme Regis to organise the town’s D-Day 70th anniversary events.

The whole community is invited to the meeting on Tuesday, October 8, at 6pm in the Woodmead Halls to progress plans for the 2014 commemorations.

Seven decades have passed since the D-Day landings in Normandy on June 6 1944 and Lyme Regis will honour the historic occasion, remembering the US troops who were based in the town while preparing for the landings, and the local men who died during the invasions.

The main aim of the second meeting will be to elect a committee to lead the group over the next year, and agree a programme of meetings.

An initial meeting was held in August when it was proposed to hold a series of events in the community, including a 1940s style dance, collating memories in a book, and talks from veterans.

Deputy town clerk Mark Tredwin said: “We had a very productive initial meeting in August, with lots of interesting ideas and memories emerging.

“We are now keen to take these ideas forward and start firming up plans for Lyme’s D-Day anniversary commemorations.

“We would encourage people of all ages to attend Tuesday’s meeting to ensure the events in 2014 involve the whole community.”

Anyone who would like to be involved with the planning or has suggestions for events is asked to contact the town council offices on 01297 445175 or email assistant@lymeregistowncouncil.gov.uk
