CYCLISTS rode through a rainy start to raise hundreds of pounds for a Dorset charity.

The group of 33 riders set off to pedal 37 miles in aid of Autism Wessex.

Dorchester mayor Stella Jones sounded a claxon to start off the riders from Charles Street in the county town.

The weather improved as the cyclists reached the end destination of Portfield School in Christchurch where refreshments awaited them.

All finishers received a medal.

Paul Reade, community and events fundraiser at Autism Wessex, said: “All the money raised will go to the charity, which provides education and residential options for up to 70 children and young adults.

“It was a shame we didn’t have as many people taking part as we would have liked, which was about 50 or 60.

“But it went well and we’re hoping to build on the success by hosting about two cycle fundraisers a year in the future.

“We’d like to thank engineering company Meggitt for sponsoring the ride.”

Riders passed by Blandford and Kingston Lacy in Wimborne en route to Christchurch.

Bridport News photographer John Gurd completed the course in two hours, 38 minutes, raising £100 for the charity.

He said: “I have just taken up cycling and this was my first charity race.

“The best bit was finishing in under three hours which was my target. I was relieved to have refreshments just outside Blandford supplied by members of the rotary club and would like to thank everyone for sponsoring me.”
