BRIDPORT Town Council is to pump more cash into refurbishing an outdoor skatepark.

Councillors have already agreed to put in £10,000 for resurfacing and members of the finance and general purposes committee have now voted to inject £5,000 more for health and safety maintenance.

The first stage of the work is expected to cost no more than £22,000 in total but town surveyor Daryl Chambers warned the final figure for the project could be around £60,000.

He told members of the finance and general purposes committee that the second phase to replace substantial pieces of equipment which were substandard would be around £40,000 but could be higher.

He said: “They also want to increase the size of it so we may be looking at another £30,000 down the line.

“These are future things and once the group down there is established I will expect them to do quite a bit of fundraising themselves.”

He added that on civic day visiting dignitaries saw the town’s projects, including the skatepark, and were astounded with what had been delivered and what the town was hoping to deliver.

A steering group with youngsters has been set up with the idea of redesigning the park in Plottingham. The redesign is in the second stage and will only be done once the resurfacing and safety repairs have been carried out.

Some of the money for the first stage is coming from the council’s contingency budget, £2,000 is available from rent paid by gas contractors who use a council compound.
