VISITORS braved unpredictable weather at the RNLI Fun Day at West Bay.

But the annual event, organised to raise funds for the lifeboats and lifeguards service, saw an impressive turnout.

The event on Sunday included cream teas served at the Salt House, a duck race, and various stalls and children’s activities on the Green. More than 600 Jurassic candles were sold and lit along the west pier.

There was some disappointment when the two rescue boats and rescue helicopter scheduled to perform an air-sea rescue display were called away to three separate emergencies.

The Lyme Regis inshore lifeboat demonstrated a sea rescue in their absence.

More than £2,600 was raised, down on previous years. Collection buckets raised about £165 compared to in excess of £800 last year.

Jim Slade, the RNLI’s regional press officer, called the day a success.

“People are inspired when they actually see the work of the RNLI, so calling off the display hit the collection buckets hard, I think,” said Mr Slade.

“All in all it was a very enjoyable day, and the feedback from the visitors was very positive.”

Co-ordinator of the event and vice chairman of the Bridport branch Ian Russell expressed his thanks to the event’s sponsors, West Bay businesses Spar and the Tea Caddy, and all the individuals who helped out on the day.

Anyone wishing to make a donation to the RNLI can find collection boxes in various businesses throughout Bridport, or contact treasurer John Sanders on 01308 422928 for more details.
