BRIDPORT’S river of fire streamed down to West Bay as the Carnival Torchlight Procession took to the streets.

Up to 10,000 people flocked to the town last night for the spectacular end to Bridport Carnival weekend as 1500 flaming torches lit up the route to West Bay.

Town Mayor Maggie Ray was the first to hold aloft her torch to signal the start to one of Bridport’s most popular events.

Carnival chairman Shaun Fox lit the mayor’s torch and paid tribute to the volunteer committee who make the annual carnival possible.

“They are a dedicated team. Everyone has their own role to play, and they just get on and do it,” he said.

Flanked by her consort Martin Ray and former mayors, Coun Ray led the crowd, following a float bearing Bridport’s carnival “royalty” – Carnival Princess Chloe-Amber Cash and her attendants.

As the flame was passed among the torchbearers, the procession set off from Bucky Doo Square and down South Street, creating a dramatic spectacle.

Traffic on the A35 was held up as the thousands crossed in to West Bay Road and filed down to the beach.

There a huge bonfire had been built and the band Freak Circus entertained the crowds while the still-burning torches were cast into the embers.

Then at 10.30pm, Bridport Carnival exploded in to light, sound and colour as the traditional firework display brought gasps of admiration from onlookers.

Today the money collected from the carnival events is being counted and proceeds will go to the beneficiaries chosen from local groups and organisations
