West Bay Discovery centre celebrated the arrival of its 100,000th visitor since opening the doors six years ago.

The centre, which has a won a host of awards, opened in 2018 and provides local people and visitors with information on the area's heritage and history.

The 100,000 visitor was retired GP Mark Hunter who was visiting the area with his wife.

Volunteers discovered that Mr Hunter had spent several weeks in Bridport in the 1970s to complete his medical training and once attended a medical emergency in West Bay.

He was presented with a bag of West Bay "goodies" as a memento of his visit to the centre.

John West, trustee for the centre, said: "It’s been a really exciting landmark to reach especially after two challenging years during the Covid pandemic when we were unable to open for long periods.

"Its not just about numbers either when you look in our visitor book you’ll see comments from people around the world saying how much they have enjoyed their visit and discovered new things about West Bay.

"It’s that sort of feedback that makes it all feel so worthwhile for all those who put a lot of time in voluntarily."

The centre is based at the former West Bay Methodist Chapel which dates back to 1849. It was empty for several years after it ceased as a place of worship in 2006.

The Grade-II listed building was restored and adapted into the centre after Bridport Area Development Trust secured a £240,000 grant from the Government’s Coastal Communities Fund (CCF) in April 2017.

As well as having themed exhibitions and providing the latest local information, the centre also runs a programme of talks, guided walks, and events.

Since opening the centre has collected 11 separate awards. These include four gold awards from Dorset Tourism and a bronze award from the national tourism body, Visit England.

Mr West added: “We have a great team of enthusiastic volunteers who help make the centre the success it is.

"You never know who is going to come through the door. Our visitors often have their own stories to share with us.

"Sometimes its about their previous visits to West Bay over many years or perhaps they or their relatives have lived or worked locally in the past. Their recollections are both fascinating and valuable to us."

The West Bay Discovery Centre is open every day, except Mondays, from 11am to 4pm and there is no entrance fee.
