A beach was transformed into a huge dancefloor as Britain’s biggest guitar festival returned – and it was young, local talent which stole the show.
Guitars on the Beach took place in Lyme Regis on Saturday, when things were a little different.
This year’s event was a salute to rock legends lost in 2017 and amateur guitarists from far and wide gathered on the beach to form an enormous tribute as a mark of respect to icons who influenced generations.
Rather than having a rock icon as headline act, this year, organised focussed on giving a platform to young, homegrown talent.
An event spokesman said: “It was fantastic. What made it glorious this year was taking the step of instead of going after a star, we would showcase all these young bands and I’m so glad we did that; they were absolutely tremendous. T Minus 10 were a group of 12-year-olds who got up and slayed the place. We need this young blood and talent for the future of rock and roll.
“The kids are alright, as is goes.”
Acts included up-and-coming Lyme band Dream Phaser, Chard rock band The IOUs, young brothers and sister trio The Little Streets from Uplyme and Lyme jazz fusion band Slinky Machine.
The spokesman said: “The whole beach was a dancefloor with people bopping around.”
Unfortunately, the world record attempt was unsuccessful, but organisers are optimistic next year will be ‘even better.’
The spokesman said: “Next year, we will continue the idea of showcasing young bands -they are the future. But we will also make it a bit easier for amateur guitarists to join in with smaller slots. But the whole beach was full of happy, smiling playing, clapping people having good fun.
“It was tremendous – but next year will be epic.”
