The lifeboat crew received an unusual alert to investigate a lost buoy drifting along between Lyme Regis and Charmouth.

Volunteer crew for Lyme Regis RNLI received an alert at 8.19pm on Sunday, May 5 to investigate a navigation buoy drifting between Lyme Regis and Charmouth to determine if it was a hazard.

Eight minutes later, four crew members on board the lifeboat Spirit of Loch Fyne arrived on scene and identified the buoy as a starboard mark bearing the number 5 and markings which indicated that it belonged to Exmouth Port Authority.

The crew reported the findings to HM Coastguard together with buoy’s accurate navigation position and rate of drift.

Once it was determined no lives were at risk, the lifeboat returned to Lyme Regis harbour and the buoy was left by the crew.

This was the 14th service call for Lyme Regis RNLI crew in 2024, the year in which the lifesaving charity celebrates its 200th anniversary.
